Nollaig na Mna and Driekoningen

In Ireland, on 6th January, we celebrate Nollaig na Mna. It is the gaelic for Women's Christmas, a day that traditionally the men in the house do the housework and the cooking, as a "Thank You" for the work carried out by the women of the house in the run up to and including Christmas. As a feminist I think that it is really important for men and women to share the burden of housework and housekeeping all the year round, but I do know that in some cases the woman is the primary carer and will spend more time at home, and I do think that it is really important to acknowledge this work today.

In Belgium and Holland it is DrieKoningen, the day when the Three Kings arrived to Bethlehem having followed the star.

So to all my blog friends,

Happy Women's Christmas

Nollaig na Mna dhuit

Big hugs,

Margie

Dear Margie,
happy new Year, happy Nollaig na Mna and happy Driekoningen!!! :D
I have so many things to say to you, but first of all I want to apologize for my long silence. Due to circumstances I wasn´t able to keep contact with so many blogger-ladies these last months, but now I hope to find time again. At the end of this week I´ll post something for you... you´ve been waiting such a long time for it.
Many congratulations also for both your husband and you; if I understood well, you´ll be grandparents this year? :)
I remember very well the Driekoningen-day and when I was a child my mother always baked pancakes that day. Next Saturday both our daughters will be dressed like ´kings´ - together with many other schoolchildren - and they will sing songs, receive sweets and collect some money for a project in Africa.
All my best wishes, love and greetings,
Marjolijn

Women's Christmas -- what a lovely idea! I think we celebrated early as my husband made pizza Monday night and my son and his girlfriend brought up a wonderful vegetarian lasagne last night. I've been utterly spoiled.

And happy Nollaig na Mna to you!

This sounds wonderful but my Hubby shares the chores when he is at home.
We have a deal... I do the inside & he does the outside (minus the gardening, we both do that)!!

What a concept! But, truth is, I wouldn't want this to be a one-day thing. Around here, my beloved does so very much. It's great!

mmm well DH did take the girls to bed this evening, mainly because I have been feeling a bit yuk. And after, I have made lunch and dinner every drink cleaned walked to the supermarket and back again in the thick snow we have had. Whilst he has admitedly worked hard on his laptop and phone at home. Does this count as my Womans Christmas? lol.

Dont worry I am going to get him to put the kettle on in a minute!

Lovely post Margie. Hope you have a lovely New Year to you and your family.

I think that is one of the most important holidays there can be! I wish we had in Finland that too, but no! I have to say I'm on the same line with you, both man and woman should take part at household tasks but if its not so, good that sometimes women can get the thank you of it as they should get!

I wish you all the best for the year 2010.

Hello Margie

I found a translation program on google if you want to use it on my page. I use it on yours. It is direct translation from Swedish to English. Maybe not everything is right, but we can understand each other:)
