My Kitchen Aid does not get enough use, I tend to use it for pancakes, however when Leiny is home she puts it to work, making cupcakes.

Today she baked honey and vanilla cupcakes, she found the recipe on here, she is putting Betty Crocker frosting on them....yum, yum. The perfect pick me up for the January blues.

So much has happened since I last posted. November brought the death of my Godfather, Uncle Mick, an incredible man who had an amazing life. A book on his life will soon be published, I am so sad he did not get to see it published. My poor Dad has lost his youngest and his eldest brother this year.

November blue and green

Blue is my favourite colour, I love cornflower blue and this wreath with cornflowers and daisies (marguerites) hangs over the mantle piece in the living room.

Mr. Margie has been busy in the garden and the forest in the last few weeks, and with the rainfall we have been having he never goes out without his wax hat.

The cape cod style bathroom at Chez Margie, sports some Margie's Crafts custom made (recycled fabric) cushion covers. I just love white lace ribbon.

The living room door is festooned by a curtain with lace edging and the blue chair is one of a pair ( a gift from Mr. Margie in the last few years). I love how candle light sets the ambiance in the evenings.

I have the apples and nuts at the ready for the Púca (Celtic fairy folklore creatures, who arrive after dark). As a child, my sisters, cousins and I, we went from house to house with a carved turnip, we wore capes or large coats, and sang old Irish songs or recited poetry. My mother made a Barm Brack, a dried fruit bread which contained various objects baked into the bread and was used as a sort of fortune telling game. In the barmbrack were: a pea, a stick, a piece of cloth, a small coin (originally a silver sixpence) and a ring. The bread was sliced and each item, when received in the slice, was supposed to carry a meaning to the person concerned: the pea, the person would not marry that year; the stick, "to beat one's wife with", would have an unhappy marriage or continually be in disputes; the cloth or rag, would have bad luck or be poor; the coin, would enjoy good fortune or be rich; and the ring, would be wed within the year. We played "bobbing" in a basin of water for apples or coins. A game whereby you were only allowed to use your mouth, your hands had to be placed behind your back. We usually finished off the evening telling ghost stories.

Now most people here in Ireland celebrate Halloween, wearing masks and costumes, children go on "trick or treat" visits. The turnips have been replaced by pumpkins (much easier to carve) and the Barm brack only contains a ring.

Knitting projects 2

I am still knitting the aran baby blanket, in moss stitch, it is so big now that I get very warm when I am working on it. The Aran is undyed, unwashed and smells like outdoors.

Leiny knit these fingerless mitts last winter. She knit a pair of mitts that can be converted to fingerless gloves by pulling the flap back and securing it on a button (will put photos in another post) for me in red and I love wearing them.

I bought these hanks of Araucania hand dyed wool at the Knitting and Stitching show last year, I have yet to find a pattern to begin a project with them. I thought about knitting cushion covers, a hat and scarf, a chunky cardi, but I still do not know yet. What do you think? Any ideas?

A trip to the woods with Mimi and Mathilde

Mimi and Mathilde, our two black nine year old labs, love to go for a walk in the woods behind our house. They are always eager to get out for a long run and do some dog orienteering, whatever the weather. As soon as I take their leads off they are ready for action. I love how their coats shine in the sun.

Autumn is a particularly lovely time in the woods, fallen leaves and moss make a lovely carpet, but the peace and tranquility of the moment is lost as soon as Mimi comes thundering along the path.

These dry ditches are perfect for long jump practice, but are more like steeplechase jumps when it rains. Mathilde leaps up, with incredible speed and strength.

The jump can be made even more exciting by repeatedly jumping over and back, stretching the back legs out and reaching towards the on coming bank with the front paws.

A good search around under trees satisfies their curiousity too.

Even after an hour of manic running and jumping, they dont seem at all tired. They both take off along the paths back home at a rapid pace, as soon as I give the command, leaving me trailing along behind. Every now and then Mimi looks back to make sure I am still behind. Mathilde will come back to walk along beside me for a few moments waiting for the command to run ahead and join Mimi. I put them both back on the leash until we are back home.

Autumn harvest and knitting

This beautiful hollyhock has been flowering for weeks, and is visible from the kitchen window. I love that rich colour.

I harvested the last of the grapes from the greenhouse, they are small but so sweet and juicy.

I had to attend college last weekend, and stayed over at a really beautiful Bed and Breakfast, Samuel's Heritage in Waterford. I had apple pie and tea on arrival, and a wonderful fresh local produce breakfast next morning. I really enjoyed the hospitality, the view, the peace and tranquility, and I slept really well. Susan, the owner and hostess, was very friendly and helpful. I even managed to finish my Sublime organic merino dk cardi, I just love the colour and the softness. Now all I have to do is press it out and find the right button. I am thinking a wooden hand made one would be good. Any ideas?

Knitting projects

My project this summer was based on a little summer jumper I made for Mel twenty seven years ago. I knit her a little white jumper with a red and yellow stripe, she was so cute wearing it under her Levi's dungarees. I wanted to make Isla something similar. I purchased some wool at Lidl, and could not find a pattern.

My mum always says that "necessity is the mother of invention" so taking her advice, I made my own pattern, guessing the size, and finding the challenge easier than I had expected. In a couple of hours I had finished this stripe jumper, choosing a button for the back closing and sewing it up just in time for our visit to Belgium.

Isla looked so cute wearing it, I could see where I will have to tweak some of the pattern, but overall I am quite pleased with my efforts.

I made a Denis the Menace hat for my little friend James a few weeks ago, and I also completed a Debbie Bliss baby kimono that was on the needles for almost three years. There is great satisfaction in completing a project.

I still have two other projects on the needles. The Aran blanket (two years on the needles and getting longer each month), a sublime oatmeal (organic merino wool) cardi for myself, I will have to complete them before the Knitting and Stitching show (Dublin) 10th-14th November so I can shop for new projects. I will be volunteering at the Knit 1 Pass it on stand again this year.

Autumn wedding

Mr. Margie and I attended Seun and Daniel's wedding yesterday at the Victory centre in Dublin. The sun was shining (a rare occurance this year), the newly wed couple looked absolutely beautiful. I wore my "Coast" dress, with a "Micheal H" fascinator, and a "Primark/Penneys" coat. I was pleased to meet so many of Mr. Margie's work colleagues, all of whom made me feel so welcome.

Earlier this week I met Jonnet Middleton at her "Future menders" exhibit during the Fringe Festival in Dublin. I spent a pleasant half hour darning with her while she was interviewed by International journalists. I also met Sheila from the Crafts Council of Ireland, a felt maker and mender. It was a real pleasure to listen to Jonnet's philosophy, she has not bought anything for the last three years and believes in mending and making do. She is inspired by her 94 year old grandmother. She took 500 knitted pandas to china earlier this year as a guest of the Chinese government and presented them to an orphanage, click here to see a video of her panda project.

Apple Harvest

Apple harvesting is so satisfying, filling the baskets with different varieties of home grown apples.
The apples in the basket on the left are a variety called Discovery, they are an early soft apple, with a slightly acidic taste, they should be treated like a soft fruit. The ones in the basket on the right are the James Grieve variety, these ones store better and in fact taste better a few weeks after harvest.

Karen, you are my Inspiration

While on holiday in Mallorca (Majorca) I did some crochet at the beach, because I was inspired by Karen at Karenskrafts , she did some crochet on the beach earlier this year.

I love her blogs and every visit yields some new inspiration as her creativity is incredible, the colours, fabrics, wool, food, all intersting and exciting.The finished pieces are truly works of art.

I do not know what the crochet I started will evolve in to as yet, but with Karen's blogs to keep me inspired, I know it will be a fun journey.

Karen awarded "Margie's Crafts" with a versatile blogger award in July from her 4 Lil' Girls blog, and I really appreciated the award, but did not get to post about it until now.

First meetings, reunion and a celebration

Mr Margie and I have been celebrating with family in Belgium, he and I have been together for twenty five years now, and his parents celebrated 50 years of marriage at the end of August.

We also spent a week in Majorca, relaxing, soaking up the sunshine in preparation for the Autumn and Winter.

Some of you who know us personally will know that this has been a particularly difficult year for us, Mr Margie's business closed, we faced financial uncertainty, and debt. I took Leiny to Dublin airport and had a melt down in the bathroom, angry with our political leaders when I saw how many young well educated people were emigrating. We planned a new start, I stopped listening to the doom and gloom on the radio and in the media, in order to function in a positive way at work. A few weeks later our big plan to emigrate, failed despite committments and assurances, at the last possible moment.

Our ability to adapt and an openess and willingness to change and to think outside of the box, (along with family and friends support and love) helped us through the difficult times. However, it was all put into perspective when two family members passed away suddenly in February. Some family members were taking flights to the USA for a funeral while others were flying back home to Ireland for another. I stood in the graveyard looking at the faces of people I had not seen for years, some family, some neighbours, and thought that family, community and our interdependance as humans is more important than everything else. I surrounded myself with like minded crafters used Chez Margie saturdays and tuesdays and the blogs to keep afloat. I cherished every comment left on my posts.

Now we face into the autumn (fall) with more uncertainty, but with the knowledge that we have hope (I think this tree sums up our year, I saw it growing strong on the top of a 15 ft building in Majorca, and immediately I was drawn to it, a wonderful symbol of hope).
I have already had my first day back studying and while I will continue to craft and blog, however, Chez Margie will not be open for business until after all assignments have been handed in (I am taking this on while still working full time). In 2005 I completed my MSc in Equality Studies and am now working on a H Dip which will open the door to some teaching practice, with a view to a PhD in a couple of years.

Living room makeover

The living room has had a complete makeover, gallery white on the walls and all the mexican pine furniture painted satinwood white. New crisp white curtains on the door and window. Clean and fresh for the Autumn. Gog and Magog were dusted down and inspired the colour scheme. Leiny's Interim exhibition prints were hung. It was a welcome distraction during the unseasonally cool summer we are experiencing.

Summer Supper

Fresh Melon with lemon balm leaves (melissa officinalis) and nasturtium flowers set the tone for a summer supper. Of course every Irish home serves new potatoes and fresh garden peas for main course at this time of year.

creating Strawberries and Cream cupcakes from the Primrose bakery recipe book.

The heavenly scent of, Lathyrus odoratus, sweet pea reminds me of when I was young and staying over at my Grandmother's house. It is currently winding its way up the side of the Arbor outside the back door, tiny delicate stems sneaking around the timber lattice.

A week of birthdays

Isla was one last week, her birthday party was special, we were all together as a family.

We had multiple celebrations as next day it was Mr. Margie (Grandad)'s birthday, we drank non-alcohol pimms and cucumber water early in the day.

We had sandwiches, crisps, fruit skewers and vegetables for the dips, the party accessories were from Party Pieces.

The tables were set up in the garden and the sun stayed shining, the atmosphere was relaxed.

We also celebrated my birthday too, eating, chatting, and catching up.

Aunty Lein and Mammy Mel made the cake, muffins and cupcakes, these strawberry and cream muffins were the favourite.

commissioned by Gerald Fitzgerald, the Duke of Leinster and extensive work was carried out on the house by the architect Richard Morris.

Exhibition

A few weeks ago Leiny had her Interim exhibition at Uni. She worked very hard for the event, exhibiting a body of work in progress based on our family herstory. Her exhibit provided an oasis of clean lines, neutral colours, and minimalism, where print, craft, pattern and sound pieces complimented her theme.

Isla came along to her first exhibiton and delighted us all by recognising Aunty Lein's work.

Leiny was on hand at the opening to meet the guests and discuss her concepts and ideas. She looked stunning in a green silk (Monsoon Aubrey) dress.

Classic and Vintage Car Show

On sunday morning Rommeij and I loaded up Morris (Maurice) for a day out at the Classic and Vintage Car show in Terenure (Dublin),complete with chairs, cushions and picnic basket.

The sun was shining and our spirits were high, the cushions, rugs and one of the Tilde dolls looked very sweet on the back seat.
After overheating about 100 meters from the entrance, where we were swiftly assisted by my uncle, who came to our assistance by chance, we almost made it to the Morris Minor Club parking area. A helping hand from Denis (Chairperson of the Club) and from some other club members, saw that we soon parked Morris up near to his older cousin Morris Oxford (photo above). A huge big Thank You to Seamus, Denis and crew who put Morris back on the road.

I was delighted to discover this bus (exactly like the one I travelled to school in each day). There was so much to see.

These two Mercedes showed off their finery to much appreciation, rows and rows of cars, vans, trucks, clubs and enthuaists.

Rommeij was in celebratory mood as her collection is selling well at Om Diva in Druiry Street, Dublin. Click on her name to see her collection and on the shop name to see more photos.

She loved this VW van, reminding her of her family travels in Europe when she was younger.

The most exciting part of the day was meeting Julie M, fellow blogger over at Oh Well.. who was there with her beautiful Mini's, her family and other Mini Club members, who all made me feel so welcome. We had arranged to rendevous on line. It was so wonderful to meet Julie in person, because we have know each other in cyperspace it was so natural and easy to meet and chat. We left each other with hugs and a promise to meet again over the summer.

Morris took us home safe and sound, we were tired but contented after all the events.

Mid Summer Wedding

The beautiful bride, Domonie, with her maid of honour, and sister, Kayla, outside the church. Domonie made the beautiful waistband for her dress herself, sewing fine beads, jewels and pearls on to a velvet ribbon.

I wore a powder blue "Regine" dress and coat, with a Condici hat (in the church), I spent some time chatting with Georgia and Chelsea, two London girls, cousins of the bride, who are magnificant musicians and singers.

Domonie, changed her outfit after dinner and danced all evening in this stunning gown.

Mr. Margie and I had a wonderful time at the wedding chatting and dancing (my feet never left the dance floor) with family, friends and guests. We hope Domonie and Ciaran have a fabulous life together.

Pre wedding BBQ

Tomorrow on the longest day of the year Ciaran (my first cousin) will marry his sweetheart, Domonie, at our local church, followed by a wedding reception at Carton House. Last night we spent the evening (yes it was dry)at Martinstown House, a chance for the International families and guests to meet before the big event.

After the food, we had Irish dancing in the garden,

Domonie, bride to be, introduced her Guyanese and Canadian family to the Irish family

The sun even shone for a while, and the tables were dressed in pretty pastel linens. It was Pimms o clock all evening.

Ciaran and Domonie mingled with all the guests, parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, cousin in laws, young and old, all happy to share in the occassion.

Domonie's sister Kayla arrived in peach with pearls, a New York girl sharing her style,

Mother of the groom and aunt of the bride share some smiles,

Uncle Pat and Mr. Margie get on board the magic carpet, while the musicians strike up just before we lit the candles at dusk.

Baskets

Chez Margie hosted another of Heike's basketmaking sessions in May, four beautiful baskets were completed on the day, there were two beginners, Margaret and Eilish, who both made circular baskets and were brave enough to put handles on too. Sheila and Clodagh have some experience and they both tackled shopping baskets with excellent results.

I love how the buff and native willows blend to make these stunning colours. Again we were spoiled totally by Clodagh's beautiful baking, scones and jam, bread and cakes.

The workshops are all finished for the summer, and Autumn planning is underway.

Flowers in bloom

Poppies, geraniums, and peonies are abundant under the curly hazel tree and the magnolia.

Further down the garden near the hen house, at the walnut tree, the lilies and perennial cornflower are thriving, and so too are the weeds.

A single peony flower fills the room with scent.

Summer is here althought the temperatures have dropped considerably.

New Life

they are curious and eager to learn,

but not straying too far from mother hen.

Rhubarb Crumble

Leiny and I harvested the rhubarb yesterday, this was the best year yet with lots of pinky stalks perfect for baking.

Leiny and Rommeij made the Nigella Lawson Rhubarb Crumble (recipe here) for dessert last night, served with custard and ice cream. Result: ten totally satisfied diners.

His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama

I was part of a group of over 1000 people who extended a Céad Mile Fáilte (a hundred thousand welcomes) to His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Kildare town centre today.

The Brigid flame was presented to His Holiness by the two keepers of the flame, re kindled in 1993 and tended since. Sr. Mary Minehan also presented him with a Bog Oak and Silver Brigid's Cross especially commissioned at Newbridge Silverware. See more photos of the visit to Kildare here

Two local school children sang the Brigid song and presented His Holiness with a Brigid's cross.
The bronze sculpture an acorn, with a perpetual flame in the town centre was host to international media and the mood of the assembled crowd was one of reverence and emotional quiet. Liam O Flynn's Uileann pipes music hypnotising and haunting us while we waited.

For those of you who know my obsession with basketmaking and willow, I was so pleased to see the willow circle surrounding the bronze sculpure in full spring mode.

Earlier today His Holiness, Richard Moore (Children in Crossfire, who lost his sight as a ten year old boy on the streets of Derry during the Troubles), and Mary Robinson (retired Irish President and UN High Commissioner on Human Rights) were in City West at a social forum dedicated to creating a space for dialogue. Tomorrow His Holiness travels to Limerick for a special address on the theme of forgiveness.

Spring has sprung

There are signs of spring everywhere, blooms and buds, majestic hosts of daffodils, april showers, and pale green growth.

Curly willow near the greenhouse, is budding in beautiful green.

Mr. Margie gave the lawns their first cut of the season.

Pheasant's eye narcissus are my absolute favourite spring bloom, these pretty flowers seem to smile through the green leaves, as they gently sway in the breeze.

The apple trees are bursting with spring blossoms, green leaves sheltering palest pink.

I knit this Noro Silk Garden Lite wool bolero for Isla in about three hours. The pattern called "Peggy" is from the Noro Kids book By Jane Ellison. I really love knitting with Noro.

I still have two other projects on my needles and will soon be starting on baby knits for my godson William and his wife Annemarie, they are due their first baby in early July.

Happy St. Brigid's Day to everyone, we are again celebrating the feast of Imbolc, a very special day in the Irish calender, and indeed in County Kildare where St. Brigid lived. There are many events planned to commemorate and celebrate over the next few days, click here and see what Feile Bride 2011 have planned.

Imbolc means,“in the belly” (of the Mother), this was the time to celebrate the stirrings of spring, the sprouting of seeds in the womb of Mother Earth. this day belonged to Brigit, the Goddess of Fire, and patroness of smith-craft, poetry and healing (especially midwifery). There are several ways of spelling Brigit, (Bridget, Bridgit, Bríd or Bride) who is associated with Holy Wells, so, as well as lighting candles and bonfires, there is a tradition of trying strips of cloth on bushes beside the wells.

Clodagh's homebaking

Yesterday at the Basketmaking session, we were treated to the most amazing scones. I will never be able to eat scones again without comparing them to Clodagh's home made scones. She made bread too (not in the photos) perfect brown seeded bread (by perfect I mean, shape, flavour, texture) that we liberally spread butter, cheese or cold meat on.

When we finished the savoury, we had these beauties to devour, lemon drizzle and orange drizzle maderias, and carrot cakes like you have never tasted before.

The day was very special, ten women, crafting, sharing food, stories, ideas,and most of all laughing and having fun.

My mum is a fantastic knitter, she taught me to knit when I was very young and since then she has inspired me in all my creative knitting projects. She always has a pair of needles with her. She taught my sisters, daughters, nieces and nephews to knit also.

She can knit intricate honeycomb, blackberry and cable patterns without looking at the pattern. She encourages everyone at Knitting group on Tuesdays, whether they are a beginner or an advanced knitter, she will respect everyone who tries. I think she is fantastic and I love her very much.

A few months ago Leiny graduated with a first class degree in Visual Art Practice.

Duane also graduated on the same day, you can see his work here, a double celebration for two amazing people who are wonderful artists. During the summer they both had an exhibition of their work "Space in Converse" as part of the Eigse Festival in Carlow. You can see the photos and read about it here on a post I put on this blog earlier this year.

Leiny has accepted a place at a University in England to do a Masters in Printmaking starting in two weeks. I could not be more proud of her.

Even more Snow

It has been snowing and freezing at Chez Margie and all across Eastern Ireland since last saturday. We never get snow like this here in Ireland, it usually lasts a day or so. I braved it to work the last two days, but today I am happy to be home with Mr. Margie and Leiny.

Leiny took the dogs out for a walk, they look so sleek against the snow. The countryside looks like a picture postcard.

Mr. Margie, made hot lard feed for the chickens and the birds in the garden. We have about 6-8 inches of snow.

Leiny was going to make a snowman but the snow would not make a good firm shape.

We are so lucky to have the Landys. Mr. Margie has been helping the neighbours and is going up to Wolfhill to take my parents to the shops.

We woke up to a winter wonderland at Chez Margie this morning. I love my Land Rover Defender 90, and when it snows I know that I can still drive where I have to.

A snow shovel (and a picnic hamper with a flask, torch, sandwiches, and a rug) and I am ready to take the Landy out and about.

Anya Hindmarch Kildare Village

Most of you know by now that my favourite bags are from designer Anya Hindmarch, and I am so lucky to live close to Kildare Village Oultet stores. Today I was invited to the Anya Hindmarch luxury shopping event at the Village. The Village was also hosting a film shoot by Xpose (it will be aired on Ireland's TV3 tomorrow at 6pm) and Michelle, the Marketing Manager at Kildare Village was on hand to ensure the shoot went well.

On arrival at my favourite shop, I met with Guiseppe and Pippy, and we were taken care of by the ever attentive and friendly staff.

The shop has been relocated and the new space provides a splendid space for the display of gorgeous bags. Beautiful flower arrangements and posies were placed on the display cabinets and dotted about the glass table tops.

Champagne, tea cakes and chocolate provided the visitors with some TLC, a great chance to forget about the economic and political upheaval here at the moment (and did I mention how friendly and attentive the staff were?)

Kitchen makeover

The kitchen needed a new coat of paint. It has been six years since it was painted. Mr. Margie did the whole room in a few hours last weekend. Leiny put some cloves in oranges yesterday in beautiful patterns and they have given the room a lovely scent.

The dresser too got a new coat of paint, Dulux Dragonfly quick dry makes a great background for the black wire tray and accessories. The red and white cups, plates and bowls are from Dunnes stores.
With the winter evenings closing in earlier each day, candle light brightens up the room.

So the kitchen is bright and fresh all ready for Christmas and the long doll has a new place to sit on the sofa.

Winter warming

Turville

I recently revisited the village of Turville, in the Chiltern hills in Buckinghamshire, a few miles from where Mel lives, with Mel, Isla and my Dad.

The village is infamous for a number of TV shows that were filmed there. The Vicar of Dibley, Midsomer Murders and some of you may recoginise the windmill in the right corner of the photo, from the classic childrens favourite, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

We visited the church and were delighted to find a cosy warm interior after the chilly wind outside. This stained glass inside, affords views out over the village, through its traditonal leaded glass. It reminded me of one of the episodes of the Vicar of Dibley where there is huge discussion over a stained glass window and its depiciton.

There is no such confusion in relation to this window as it depicts the church's name, St. Mary the Virgin.

We strolled around the village admiring the landmarks and mingling with some tourists and hill walkers before retiring to The Bull and Butcher pub. It is the ideal place to drop in to on an Autumn afternoon, to warm by the fire, and have a hot chocolate, pot of tea, or a stronger drink, after a stroll through the town or over the hills.

The Long Doll

When I first discovered the Tilde range by the Norwegian designer Tone Finnager, I could not find any Irish stockists. So I made the best of the fabrics I could find and used some Cath Kidston.

Last week I had the pleasure of meeting Rose, in her shop, The Cottonwood Tree in Kilcullen County Kildare, just a few miles from where I live. You can not imagine how excited I was when I stepped inside the compact, inviting and exciting shop, to see all the Tilda range of fabrics, books, papers etc...

The shop is a little gem, with wool, fabric, accessories, ribbons, books, handmade aprons, and lots more including very pretty notice boards handmade by Rose.

Rose is an excellent hostess and made every customer feel special.

I was like a little child in a sweet shop. I purchased some of the Tilda fabric, a Tilda book and some Debbie Bliss wool. All very good value and well worth a visit.

To further add joy to my day Rose asked me to do some doll workshops at her shop in the New Year. There are lots of other craft classes running there between now and Christmas.

Leiny and I will be at the Knit 1 Pass It On Stand at the Knitting and Stitching Show in the RDS Dublin next weekend teaching knitting and crochet. Please drop by and say hi.

Killarney Wedding

My Mum and I took the opportunity to dress up for my godson's (my mum's nephew) wedding to his long term beautiful girlfriend last weekend.

The happy couple Will and Anne marie, along with their five bridesmaids and grooms men made the short walk from the Europe hotel's gardens to the lake for some scenic photos.

The rain held off and the Kerry landscape was an incredibly beautiful backdrop to the truly memorable day.

The sight of the couple strolling along the waters edge added an extra touch of romance to the already romantic day. Congratulations to them both. Mr. Margie, my Mum and Dad, and I had a wonderful weekend in the Kingdom.

Baby cardigan and personalised labels

I finished Isla's cardigan, knit using Debbie Bliss Cashmerino (thank you Ana at Boladeberlin for giving me enough wool to finish the project) it now hangs on the hooks in the Nursery.

I recently got my own labels for my work, and have been testing out how they look on some of the items I have finished while here in Henley.

I have been making samples of items I will offer for sale (but more about that in the future).

Isla with Granny Margie (21 hours old), she is a little sweetheart, growing more beautiful each day. I will miss her as Mr. Margie and I are going back to Ireland in the morning.

Welcome to Baby Isla Mary born in Oxford on July 19th weighing in at 8lbs 5ozs (3775gms)

She has fair skin and strawberry blond hair, Mummy and Daddy are very proud of their little sweetheart.

Aunt leiny knit this beautiful coat for her, she will be all cozy in the winter.

We are truly blessed with such a little princess and I do feel that Dreams Really Can Come True.

The Nursing chair is recovered in Cath Kidston material, with a little heart shaped cushion for extra comfort

I knit some Debbie Bliss fair trade organic eco cotton wash cloths and some women at my work made the pink basket to hold all the little necessaries.

I thought the Bugaboo needed a bit of lace....

Mel's girlfriends brought her this little elephant, among other gifts, at the Baby Shower.

We found this little pony head (it makes horsey sounds) at the local Joules store in Henley.

A bit of history, the Silvercross, a traditonal English and Irish pram much loved by Grannies and those of us (almost Grannies) old enough to remember them.

Another baby quilt work in progress, this one for the car seat.

The cot is ready, cosy and inviting.

The wardrobe full of gifts, family treasures and must haves.

Everything ready and waiting for this little girl, who like her mother and aunty will arrive when she is ready (Mel was 19 days overdue, Leiny was four).

Henley and Oxford

I am in Henley on Thames waiting for Mel to have her baby. We have been down town at the Royal Regatta for picnics on the river bank.

While driving around Oxford we saw this guy staring out over some buildings (this photos should be below in the piece about Oxford but I could not get him to move!).

There are plenty of boats on the water and some very pretty houses on the island near the bridge that can only be accessed by boat.

Mr. Margie and I drove to Oxford with Mel last week and took an open top bus tour of the city. The students and locals all cycle everywhere.

The architecture is so beautiful and the history of the university was relayed by a very eccentric lady who had us chortling and giggling in our seats.

This one is for LuLu Kellogg, I know she is prone to the odd crown.

The tour took one hour, however the bus was a hop on and off, allowing the ticket to be valid for twenty four hours.

Leiny and Duane pictured with Des O Sullivan at the opening of their exhibition "Space in Converse" last weekend. They presented Des with an oak tree after he completed the official opening on Sunday on the second floor of Shamrock Plaza, Carlow during the Eigse festival.

Their work was well received by everyone who joined them on the day. My friend Ana from Bola De Berlin was there with her husband Thomas and their little boy James (who came along to appreciate the art too).

Earlier the same day we attended another opening of Elsie Nolan's work on the first floor.

I was enchanted by Elsie's collection "Fragile Roots" and in particular this painting "In to the Light". She is a true inspiration to all who know and meet her.

Nursery preparations

Mr. Margie made a cute shelf for the Nursery (and some corner shelves), Mel found pretty hooks in Laura Ashley for the shelf that fit in well with the vintage theme. The bags are packed and ready for the great event.

Mel has all the linens, shelves, accessories, mirror,blankets, quilts, clothes, toys unpacked ( i even tried my hand at making bunting), waiting for the vintage style Mamas and Papas Nursery furniture to arrive next week.

I am knitting and sewing in between work and gardening. We have had some really lovely sunshine in the last few days and the garden is thriving.

Its Pimms time

The Anya Hindmarch shop has relocated in Kildare Village I went along for the official opening last Thursday evening and partook of a glass of pimms, filled with summer loveliness. Nothing says summer is here quite like a pimms brimming with strawberries, cucumber and mint. The bags looked splendid in their new home as did the staff who were very helpful and welcoming. The shop is now located next to Molton Brown whose staff were also present offering visitors a hand massage.

More Baby Crafts

I have been busy creating a cot quilt, bumper and pram quilt, bunting and dolls in ready for the arrival of baby. I love this work and have a wish to do it full time.

I based all the designs on the heart favors I made last year for Mel and Chris's wedding.

Leiny and Rommeij baked 100's of cupcakes and these tiny little cakes for our Easter party.

Thinking Pink and some red

I am so happy to finally get a chance to post some of my recent knitting projects. As many of you are aware, I have no computer access since last October and have been using Leiny's, her charger had to be replaced recently, this left me without weekend access too. As a result I did get a lot of knitting done over the last few weeks.

In preparation for my little grand daughter due on July 4th I filled two little cases with little dresses, two knitted jumpers and a knitted all in one with little pink ears on the hood.

I love working with Debbie Bliss Baby Casmerino, so soft and shiny, and as we are all cat lovers I choose this pattern from Zoe Mellor's book Nursery Knits.

The week before Easter I finally got the Kitchen Aid I have been lusting for and Leiny and Rommeij made over one hundred and fifty cup cakes for our Easter gathering.

The living room sofa is now sporting this bed quilt in cheery red and green.

I have not been able to leave comments on all your blogs but I have managed to take a look at many of you and I am amazed at the beautiful work, ideas and creativity you share. You always inspire me. Thank you very much.

Easter Fever

I am still enjoying the spring time even though it is raining. The wreaths are all hung up, the feather boas and chicken decorations out and I even had time to visit Easter bunny to discuss the Egg hunt for this year....

Leiny and I have been enjoying long Sunday breakfasts (and Mr. Margie joins us when he is not cycling) and are looking forward to Mel and Chris joining us for Easter weekend.

Meanwhile the hens are working overtime and providing us with beautiful eggs each day. I have been spring cleaning and crafting for the last few weekends, but more about that in my next post.

La Fheile Bhride and Thank You

We are again preparing for our St. Brigid's Day celebrations. The Celtic Saint who lived in our area. She is the symbol of Woman in many religions. In Kildare there are many events taking place to celebrate her life.

Solas Bhride, an order of Brigidine nuns, founded by St. Brigid (who are unusual as they are Catholic and also celebrate the Goddess) hold workshops and events all through the year. A yearly event for us locals is a visit to the holy well a walk around the Cathedral, a visit to the mighty oak, and home for tea and cake. The reed cross will be made tomorrow for pride of place in the home for the year ahead.

Happy La Fheile Bhride (Happy Saint Brigid's Day) everyone.

Elly at My Everyday Things sent me a wonderful Christmas package with beautiful items, an angel a star, a heart, a sachet of Christmas scents (everything so thoughtfully chosen, perfect gifts) and a drawing by her daughter(very special as there were some greetings written in Dutch), and a very sweet card with red and white (so you Elly) images on the front. They arrived all beautifully packaged. ( I was so excited I opened them before taking a photo). Thank you both for your thoughts and kindness it really means a lot to me.

This week another pretty package arrived this time from Marjolijn at Something White. I just about managed to contain myself and take a photo before I opened it up.

Lindt chocolates in a pretty pink tin, a magazine (I am going to look at now with a cup of Earl grey tea), a linen bag, serviettes, soap, body wash and L'occitane products and a beautiful card all tied with care and attention. Thank you my dear friend, I am delighted with your gifts and your kindness.

Marjolijn and Elly you are both very inspiring and creative, I am humbled by your generosity.

Nollaig na Mna and Driekoningen

In Ireland, on 6th January, we celebrate Nollaig na Mna. It is the gaelic for Women's Christmas, a day that traditionally the men in the house do the housework and the cooking, as a "Thank You" for the work carried out by the women of the house in the run up to and including Christmas. As a feminist I think that it is really important for men and women to share the burden of housework and housekeeping all the year round, but I do know that in some cases the woman is the primary carer and will spend more time at home, and I do think that it is really important to acknowledge this work today.

In Belgium and Holland it is DrieKoningen, the day when the Three Kings arrived to Bethlehem having followed the star.

Seasons Greetings

It was Christmas Eve before Chez Margie was ready for the holiday season. Mr. Margie finished the book shelves and Leiny and I cleaned and tidied the whole house. Duane took the Christmas decorations down from the attic.

As a result of being so busy in work, I only made 15 handmade cards this year. I chose the tartan I used for the twins and had silver as a secondary theme.

Leiny looked so festive in her red billabong shirt, and was delighted to have the whole family together for the holidays. She has been knitting gloves as gifts.

She baked gingerbread cookies and I had the warm mulled apple ready when Mel and Chris arrived from their long drive and ferry trip.

Mel and Chris had a wonderful gift for us all. They are due a baby in July next year.

Rain and Floods

For the last few weeks it has not stopped raining. The roads I usually drive to work were flooded and had to be closed, I had to drive the long way around. My Landy has a leak above the door, so I needed a supply of towels to catch the flow of water.

I was one of the lucky ones, as in town many homes were flooded, and people lost everything they had. The Red Cross and the Vincent De Paul have been asking for blankets, towels, sheets etc.. as well as donations. With Christmas coming closer it will be a difficult time for many.

I have not been to visit many blogs recently but hopefully over the holiday season I will have more time. I have just updated my Christmastime Magic blog also.

The Vintage Look in Henley

Sorry I have not been visiting all your wonderful blogs. I am visiting Mel and Chris in Henley at the moment, on a welcome pre-Christmas break.

The Vintage Look, is a tiny little shop tucked away in the back of the Waitrose car park.

There are plenty of Christmas gift ideas and wonderful vintage finds.

Jugs, teapots, baskets, soapdishes, heart garlands, ribbons, lavender bags, notice boards, and tiny little mannequins for hanging jewellery on, a haven of trinkets and vintage styles. I loved shopping.

Doll making

I was itching to try out some of the new patterns I bought at the Knitting and Stitching show recently. I purchase two books, one is "Tilde's Juleideer" in norwegian and the other in english, is "Sew Pretty Christmas Home Style" by the same Author, Tone Finnager. I have entered Tilde's World. I am now offically an addict of this wonderful craftswoman's work. I have discovered there are lots of blogs dedicated to her work in numerous languages and many on line suppliers (I have not found any in Ireland as yet).

I started working on my first dolls, but as I had no Tilde fabric or Christmas fabric, I used Cath Kidston fabric and some gingham. I spent a pleasant afternoon cutting (with Leiny's help) and sewing my doll's body, arms, bendable knees and her long johns/pantaloons.

I filled the parts and set about assembling them. Some hand stitching is required.

The body began to take shape, but not before I measured and remeasured, concluding that this doll was going to be long...

Here she is complete with her wool hair and her heart on her sleeve. I have not given her a name as yet. Do you have any suggestions?

Recycling

A few weeks ago I decided to give the bathroom a little treat, it is in need of a repainting, as it is five years since I did anything there, but I neither had the time or the energy. So instead I made a little heart for the door handle from an old denim shirt
I made two new cushions for the wicker chair one from some pretty blue check material, and the other from the old denim shirt leaving the pockets intact on the front.
I gave the airing cupboard a clean up too and it all looks bright and welcoming again for a little while longer.

Happy Halloween

Lady Purple, my niece, pictured above as Luna Lovegood (with Mr.Margie as he who can not be named, and yes he did shave his head) recently turned 21 years old and hosted a birthday party with her brother

Cole, my nephew, from Penman and Paperboy (the taller one, Sirius Black) who was 20 a few days later. The party was a Harry Potter theme, (Sam with Cole was Remus Lupin).

The party took place at their family home (a perfect setting for such a theme), a peek in the bathroom,

My sister Neady was Professor Trelawney and she won first prize for her costume (well deserved),

I think Cole looked very Johnny Depp (pictured with his brother Fionn).

Leiny, my daughter, was Hermione Granger (left), Fay was a student, with Duane (Leiny's boyfriend) as Cedric Diggery (but more like Harry Potter).

Mel, my daughter, was a surprise visitor as Fleur Delacour (in blue) and her friend Sandy as Rita Skeeter.

Ploughing, Morris rally and Henley

While at the National Ploughing Championships recently I spent some time watching the different competitions, the participants are really craftsmen and women. Over 100,000 people visited over the three days and the World Championships will take place on the same site next year.

I went along to have a look at some manual shearing, I love wool and crafting with it, and I wondered what the sheep made of it all.

Last Sunday, the Irish Morris Minor Owners Club (IMMOC) went out for a treasure hunt and we all ended up at the "Annual Castledermot Thrashing and Vintage Show". 100s of classic and vintage cars and tractors lined the field and steam engines fired up in the background sending a billow of coal smoke across the sky.

I bought this old Spartan suitcase at the Henley Car boot sale. I had to fit it inside my own case to take it home on the plane. There are slatted fasteners on front and back that allows the case to expand. I wonder who owned it and where it has travelled.

I knit this little scarf while in Henley and crochet the flowers for the edges, using Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran wool.

This was the Dubarry stand at the Henley show (their boots are guaranteed for life).

Autumn is here

I spent a long weekend in Henley On Thames where I attended the County Show and drank Pimms in the sunshine on Saturday afternoon. On Sunday we attended the annual charity car boot sale. There was so much on offer, and by late afternoon the stall holders were selling boxes of items for £1 or in some cases 50p in an attempt not to have to take anything home. I bought knitting needles, fabric, a cake stand, an old suitcase, a blue gingham table cloth, and I found this Style pattern for 50p.

This is an update of my granny squares. Julie at Oh Well suggested that I use the black colour (she also suggested hot pink for fun, and I may try that yet) and I do think it works very well.

This shop, Cure Gourmande, is in Carcassonne, it specialises in biscuits (the type that melt in your mouth), chocolate covered nuts that look like olives and dragees. I love all the products, the presentation on the shelves and the way the staff package the purchases.

I still have no laptop or computer and it looks like I will not have another until after Christmas. I will try to visit as many of you as I can when I can.

Next week our neighbours are hosting the National Ploughing Championship, an International series of events, with thousands of people attending. There are hundreds of exhibitors with crafts, music, demonstrations, competitions over three days. I hope the weather stays dry.

Computers, Knitting and Long Breakfasts.

I have had no laptop for the last two weeks. I took it to the repair shop and they told me it will cost the price of a new one to repair as the mother board is broken. Leiny has kindly given me the use of hers when she is home at the weekends. Sorry if I have not been to visit your blog yet , I will visit soon.

The cupboard is full of unfinished knitting projects, mostly baby gifts. I try to have at least an hour each evening to do some crafting. This really translates as slow progress.

Leiny is knitting a baby sweater for a certain little boy, you can sneak a peek at him sleeping over at Boladeberlin, he is so cute, and his Mammy loves sheep.

Mr.Margie knew that I had been to our local Cath Kidston store and had been firm with myself about buying baby gifts and not diverting to my weakness, shoes, particularly Swedish clogs (I was wearing a pair the first time we met in Cannes, in the eighties). He came home last Sunday with them in my size, having gone to the store especially for them. I have been wearing them since.

Breakfast is my favourite meal of the day, I love when it spills over near to lunchtime. The bowl is one from a set Mr. Margie's grandmother gave us, I like to use them sometimes in memory of her.

This project is for a little girl born in England at the beginning of July, it is knitted in one piece using just garter stitch.

I sewed on the little wooden heart buttons and added a little hat to complete the package. I am considering knitting an adult size in this (as I would definitely wear it).

Crafting and creating

This is the item I purchased at the Borris Fair, an old singer sewing machine (I now have two) it is fully intact and functioning,

but does need some tender loving care, it came with an original book, and I purchased a little box of spare parts in addition.

I have always found it difficult to get good wool locally, last week I was thrilled to find this wool, an Eco wool that is 100% undyed virgin wool, at a local store, I love the earthy colours and I managed to find some cute buttons too, heart shaped wooden ones, and flecked ceramic ones.

In the last few weeks there have been four births to friends, some entering the world rather unusually, Sophie was born in the back seat of her parents car at a local petrol station, and has made headlines on a number of newspapers while her Mum, Andrea has been talking about the experience on radio too. There are still two babies due to be born, Ana at Boladeberlin is expecting her first any day now. Leiny and I have been knitting baby gifts each evening trying to keep up with the birth rate. This pattern the Aviatrix Baby Helmet is used by the knitters on Ravelry and Leiny found it on Just Jussi, who has some amazing baby knits. We have four finished in different colours (two without the strap).

Last Sunday, I finally managed to get motivated and make the cushion covers for the living room, I have the fabric for over a year, and just never got the time up until now. The living room now looks like it had a mini makeover.

I made this little gingham cushion for Morris. It looks very cute with the CK throw.

Here is a little update on the granny squares. I am not sure which colour I should use to join them together. Any ideas?

Borris Fair

Today the Margie and Mr Margie Saturday trip was to Borris Fair, en route Morris rolled over to 70,000 on the mileage counter.

At the Fair there were horses of all shapes, sizes, and colours for sale

and ladies in high heels of all shapes, sizes,

and colours

the most shapely of legs wearing those heels.

The men were trading and many deals were done, on what proved to be a sunny afternoon,

a long standing tradition continued for another year.

Mr. Margie purchased a two toned calla lily to add to our collection, I too made a purchase, but more about that in my next post.

These are the birthday gifts my sister Neady gave me, the perfect pressies are two pretty pink china cups and a CK book, all wrapped up and finished with handmade by Neady tags, tied with pink satin ribbon and in a cotton bag she personally pimped up with vintage fabrics. I love them.

This morning I drove Morris to Naas, to see the start of the Martin Earley Tour of Kildare Charity Cycle

Naas cycling club also launched their new specially designed cycling gear

All the club members were out on this dry morning, some riders nervous and thinking of the spin, times and energy levels, while others were just out for the fun. A huge turnout of local, national and international cyclists lined up, a tremendous sight along the main street.

Mr Margie was there in his new role of club sponsor and as such enjoyed a quick chat with Martin,

before the official presentations of the new gear to Mr Margie and a specially commissioned rainbow collared zippy to Martin in recognition of his cycling achievements

The four hundred cyclists took off at 10 am with Linda Keating of the Marie Keating Foundation lowering the flag signaling the start on what was a very well supported event

gaining much needed funds for this worthy cause.

Summer Vacation 2009 (France)

Mr. Margie and I went to France for our Margie and Mr. Margie Saturday on my birthday. We filled two days looking at houses and barns all for sale and all with the potential to be our second home. We saw two we were really interested in. Mr. Margie would love to take on a project he can work on with some family and friends joining in too. We looked around Rodez.

The cathedral there is a hidden gem, as is the city itself. Mel and Chris joined us and we explored the cathedral thrilled to find items of handicraft and beautiful altars.

This Christmas scene was so pretty and the colours so vivid, I really enjoyed the relaxing and serene feeling inside the cathedral.

We promised some friends we would visit. On day three, we took a three hour car journey to Canet passing fields of golden sunflowers en route.

We stopped near Montpellier on the drive for an iced tea and look at who was taking shade in the
picnic area.
When we arrived to stay with Jacques and Sandrine, they had converted the recording studio into a bakery and this pretty lady provided us with our croissant and pain au chocolate each morning (by far the best bakery I have ever visited). We met Jacques and Sandrine a few years ago at Camping La Yole.

We spent five wonderful restful days with our friends. CK a la plage.

The sun and the sea were fantastic and a perfect opportunity to read, swim and look stunning in polka dots,

I do so love the olives served with the aperitif, and there were so many perfectly charming beach restaurants to choose from.

The sea was so blue, it mirrored the sky and what could be nicer than a cool glass of rose, by the waters edge in late afternoon, watching the boats go by.

We took a visit to Perpignan on Thursday evening (each Thursday musicians and performers take to the streets for the evening) and were thoroughly entertained, this tight rope walker had us gasping and delighted at his efforts.

Our visit also included an evening of excellent food at Domaine De La Rombeau, the restaurant where Mel and Chris had their wedding reception in May this year. Pierre Henri, the owner, was very pleased to have us visit.

Our trip had a high point in Alby, a wonderful brick city (said to be the largest old brick city in the world), and just look at the museum in the town..ooh la la....

we dined in a wonderful little courtyard restaurant in the cloitre, salads with local roquefort cheese.

A visit to the cathedral brought our trip to a fitting end, its beautiful filigree stonework near the entrance were so intriciate, true craftsmanship and the colours of the frescoes were incredible, the organ music, however, was very ominus.

The statue of St. Cecile, was so beautiful, many of the wall paintings looked like three dimensional patchwork.
